What even is Irlen Syndrome?

Often referred to as visual stress or difficulties associated with Irlen Syndrome, this condition can affect both children and adults. It is frequently linked to reading discomfort, headaches, light sensitivity, and attention difficulties often observed in individuals with ADHD, along with experiences of sensory overload.

These challenges may coexist with various conditions such as autism, dyslexia, migraines, concussion, or brain injury, yet they are often overlooked. Our specialised screening helps identify if specific wavelengths of light are contributing to visual strain. Simple interventions, like colored overlays or precision-tinted lenses, can alleviate this strain, making reading more manageable, enhancing focus, and promoting a calmer mind.

This approach emphasizes addressing the core processing difficulties related to Irlen Syndrome instead of merely masking the symptoms. For many families, the outcomes are immediate and reassuring, providing clarity, relief, and practical support for learning, behavior, and overall wellbeing in the context of neurodiversity.

You and your child deserve support that feels safe, gentle, and effective. Our screening and personalised report offer a non-invasive method to tackle attention difficulties, reduce headaches and migraines, ease sensory overload, and minimise the physical strain linked to light sensitivity, especially after a concussion or head injury.

By focusing on how the brain processes visual information, we provide pragmatic solutions that families often notice right away. For parents, this can bring relief, clarity, and hope. For children, it can lead to calmer days, greater comfort, and the confidence to engage with learning and everyday life once more.

Abigail

Abigail has classroom experience supporting degree-level students in a facilitation and tutoring role. Through her own lived experience of Irlen Syndrome, particularly with maths and visual strain, she understands how exhausting and misunderstood these difficulties can be. Discovering Irlen through training brought long-awaited clarity, and she is now passionate about helping others access support that makes learning and everyday life feel easier.

OUR MISSION

We understand how exhausting it is to watch your child struggle with Scotopic Sentitivity Syndrome (SSS) or Irlen Syndrome. With professional experience in education and special educational needs (SEN), combined with personal experience of visual stress, we provide personalised screening and practical guidance to help children and adults feel calmer, more confident, and finally understood.

Our mission is to support children and families, ensuring they feel understood and hopeful. Many bright, capable children who experience neurodiversity often struggle with reading, light sensitivity, sensory overload, or behaviour challenges, leaving them misunderstood and their confidence diminished. Through personalised screening, we provide clarity, relieve stress, and offer families practical guidance to create calmer, more supportive learning environments.

We are guided by fairness, family, knowledge, and recognition. Every child deserves to be seen for who they are, not judged for how they cope. By raising awareness of SSS and Irlen Syndrome and sharing understanding, we aim to improve outcomes, protect confidence, and help children thrive, giving families reassurance, hope, and the tools to unlock their child’s potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hello@lumensense.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Around half of children and adults with reading, learning, or attention difficulties may have Irlen Syndrome.  Coloured overlays or lenses can make text clearer, more stable, and comfortable to see. This support often allows children and adults to use their reading skills more easily, read for longer periods, and benefit fully from learning or reading instruction. For some, Irlen is the solution; for others, it’s one part of the puzzle alongside other learning support.

Any child or adult who struggles with reading, learning, attention, headaches, light sensitivity, sensory overload, or behaviour linked to visual stress may benefit from a screening. Even good readers and gifted children can be helped.

Yes. Over 50 peer-reviewed studies show that Irlen screening and coloured overlays can improve reading speed, accuracy, and comprehension. Research also confirms that Irlen Syndrome is genetic, often running in families, and affects both girls and boys equally.  Find out more here.

Yes. Around 12–14% of good readers, including gifted students, experience visual stress. Coloured overlays can make reading easier and more comfortable, reduce headaches and fatigue, improve focus, and help children complete work faster and perform better on tests. Many good readers find they can read for longer periods without strain or discomfort.

We work with all ages, from young children just starting school to adults experiencing visual stress or Irlen-related challenges.

Screenings typically take around 90 minutes to two hours. During this time, we run a series of tests to see how you or y processes visual information and light.

After the screening, you’ll receive a personalised report with practical recommendations for home and school. If needed, coloured overlays or will be provided, and we offer guidance on implementing them.

Yes. The report can be used to request school access arrangements, inform teachers of your child’s needs, and create a supportive learning environment tailored to them.
